i wish the temperature would drop a little more before i indulge in my cozy autumn shades, but i am too impatient to wait any longer. exploring my collection, i realize that i don't sort my polishes by color or season, but by brand. i went through my helmer (swedish for "holder of nail polish") and chose some great polishes to get us in the breezy autumn spirit. i tried to pick polishes that were accessible (in the u.s., at least); meaning polishes in core collections or currently available in stores or online. here are my categories! deep reds many presume that darker reds should be reserved for holiday or winter months. i say "no" to that thinking. reds look classy anytime, they are terrific on all skin-types, and are both professional and vampy. it's a win-win-win. here are my favs for when the weather turns cool. "just bitten" orly (upper left): a blood red, jelly-like creme, this polish is opaque in two coats, but still manages that squishy appearance on the nail. this is from the current orly fall collection, and is easily accessible in stores and online. "ruby pumps" china glaze (lower left): this famous polish has a terrific effect; a medium to dark red jelly base with lighter red micro glitters throughout. the result is stunning; the glitters appear to be floating in the base. like a fancy bowling ball. "i'm not really a waitress" opi (right): a polish with a shimmer so fine, that it appears like a soft metallic. this remains opi's most popular polish. the best selling ever. greys i love a crisp grey creme in october. I would've included "leather skinnies" by revlon in this category, but ebay seems the only place to find it currently. all of the above are terrific, accessible polishes, and grey is the perfect new neutral: grey is the new nude. "greyfitti" sally hansen miracle gel (left): this pale grey creme has a terrific formula. opaque in two coats, this shade is a must-have that you can find right in the drugstore. "moonbaby" floss gloss (upper right): this light grey leans to a cool green in most lighting. it truly looks like the moon's surface. floss gloss generally does a good job with formulas of paler cremes, and this is no exception. i love floss gloss. "genevieve" zoya (lower right): zoya does good greys. so many, it was difficult to choose one. i like "genevieve" because it is a rich-looking, dark grey that doesn't lean too warm or too cool; it'salmost charcoal but never appears black: grey in all lighting. gourds this category could probably have a better name. these polishes are the warm cremes that i crave this time of year. the colors of various squash, mustards, and custards ... if you know a better descriptor, please let me know. "twiggy" sally hansen miracle gel (upper left): this color is difficult to describe. pale khaki, perhaps? amazingly different color: i have nothing like it in my collection. if you know of a drug-store polish that is similar, please let me know. "it's a piazza cake" opi (lower left): photographed here with matte top coat. this pumpkin colored magic is perfect for fall. "... piazza cake" was largely ignored for a couple of years (from opi's 2015 fall collection), but this year, this polish is on *everyone's* fall picks lists. don't call it a comeback. she's been here for (2) years. "golden turmeric" h&m (right): this mustard colored yellow creme is one of my favorites. this appears more yummy-creamy-custard than many similar shades picked as favorites this time of year. the formula is amazing, especially for a yellow creme. for $6/bottle you cannot go wrong. deep blues not navy, not royal, but cobalt, maybe? whatever you term them, these blues are sexy and luscious; i just can't get enough. back in fall 2015, i hunted deep blue polishes for sport. finally, i feel that main-stream brands are fulfilling that need. these dark, rich, opaque blues are sure to be a staple this autumn ... and every autumn. "combat blue-ts" china glaze (left): from the 2016 fall collection, this majestic matte blue, like opi's "... waitress" has shimmer that creates a soft metallic effect. the result on the nail is soft, matte, velvety and delicious. "tokyo nights" julie g (upper right): this teal leaning deep blue has incredible application. this unsung polish is possibly my favorite julie g. "blue suede" orly (lower right): from the 2017 fall velvet dream collection, this slightly dusty blue is the perfect colbalt for any cold weather transition. you know what? just pick up this entire collection. three polishes are featured in my fall picks, but the whole collection is worth owning. amazing shades and amazing formulas. you need it. browns i love chocolate nails for fall. while many turn to a mauve or a nude neutral this time of year, a brown is such a decadent alternative ... and has the power to be vampy while business appropriate at all times. "party bruise" floss gloss (upper left): a deep warm brown creme is gorgeous. almost opaque in one coat, this polish is easy to apply and luxurious on the nail. "stiletto" julie g (lower left): a warm taupe neutral with fine gold shimmer, this polish is no longer on the jesse's girl cosmetics website, but i have found it quite recently in rite aid drug stores. "i klove you" sinful colors, kylie jenner demi-matte (right): the brown with gold shimmer has almost a duo-chrome finish on the nail. photographed here with a glossy topcoat, my experience with this polish is that it is also very long-lasting. no chips for an entire week. purples for many nail polish enthusiasts, purple or violet is their favorite nail-color, and an opaque creme purple is the ultimate. i embrace all purples in the fall. i especially dig classic jewel-tones, the ever-present "blurples," and dusty pale cremes. "lavender" sinful colors (upper left): this polish is deceptively typical. one-coat and done (if you apply a thick'n), this cool-toned "blurple" is sweet, wearable, and surprises me each time i wear it. it is flattering on my skin-tone, and a hidden gem from this discount brand. "virgin snow" essie (lower left): this creamy lavender has a surprisingly good formula. i have destashed *many* of my essies for crap formulas, so this polish shines like the sun in comparison. perfect this time of year and throughout the winter months. "boho a-go-go" sally hansen miracle gel (right): this deep, warm-toned purple is lush. i loved it especially when my nails were short. something about a dark, rich creme on a short nail looks edgy and classy at the same time. how does that even happen? sparkles
glitters, chromes, metallic, holographic polishes ... these are not in my everyday rotation, but it pains me when they are relegated to holiday-only. as clouds dim the sky, and your world gets a bit melancholy, bring a little glitz to your nails for a fool-proof pick-me-up. the right amount of sparkle can ease that transition to fall and brighten any dull tuesday. "diamond in the raw" sinful colors sinful shine (upper left): this daek silver foil metallic with light silver glitter is an amazing polish from this discount brand. opaque in two coats, it makes a statement without going completely new year's eve on you. "velvet kaleidoscope" orly (lower left): a glittery duo-chrome (multi-chrome?) from the fall 2017 velvet crush collection. this is perfect for fall, in fact, i want my thanksgiving turkey to be this color. yum. "spacerace" h&m (right): a gorgeous holo polish that shines with all the rainbows. a terrific formula, "spacerace" earned a horrible reputation last holiday as the hardest-to-find h&m polish. but it came back to h&m stores this spring and the world wept with joy. opaque in two coats, this polish is lovely year-round. happy autumn, bitches. thanks for reading.
