subscription box time! i just received my latest collection from my orly color pass subscription. the holiday collection for 2017 "darlings of defiance." like all orly collections, this is a 6-polish collection. my subscription box also offers me a couple extra goodies: this month a "tweexy" bottle holder and a red shimmery vinyl travel bag. "champagne slushie" yikes. so great name, not so great polish. brush strokes galore and old lady frost all over. i'm not terrific with application, so polishes that showcase visible brush strokes are not for me. you may have better luck. shame this polish is so disappointing: orly's fall collection's "silken quartz" was similar, but with a way better formula and NO brush strokes. "faux pearl" off on the wrong foot, this polish righted things a bit for me. this nudey-pink leaning egg shell creme was really thick on the first coat. i added lacquer thinner before the second coat and found it much easier to work with. super opaque and super nice, i really like this polish in application and on the nail. is it unique? kinda in that its not too streaky. saw a review that said this has a subtle gold shimmer, but damned if i can detect it. sneaky sneaky. "stiletto on the run" this jelly apple red leans ever so slightly magenta. it is honestly just a bit lighter than orly's fall collection's "just bitten." (see comparison below). do you need both? maybe? "penny leather" points for unique color, i have nothing like this in my collection. this creme polish is also opaque in one single coat. lovely and interesting ... not a traditional holiday shade though. "secondhand jade" my swatch photo comes across as deep charcoal or slate. in most light, this polish appears deep green. really interesting and totally up my alley ... but again, a holiday shade? doesn't feel so holly jolly. "once in a blue moon" had high hopes for this blue/silver luster. not as many brush strokes as "champagne slushie" but still enough to discourage me. it does look like the movie "frozen." here is the "tweexy" that came in my subscription box. looks fun, but i've been too afraid to try it out as i've seen videos of polish-bottles popping out of it during use. i don't need that kind of surprise. 'silken quartz" (left) next to "champagne slushie" (right) different shades, but close. "silken quartz" is just miles above formula and result-wise. "just bitten" (left) and "stiletto on the run" (right) again, different reds for sure, and both with great formulas. maybe i don't need both? just don't know why such similar polishes were released so close to one another. overall: individually, i dig 4 of the 6 polishes. but overall, does this look like a holiday collection to you? again, individual polishes are interesting. i particularly like the non-traditional green creme. but the collection lacks the brightness and sparkle i have come to expect. "darlings of defiance" seems a bit muddy and muted compared to a traditional seasonal offering. all of the shine and glitter came in the laverne cox curated "celebrate yourself" supplemental collection. (above image from the orly website) this collection, released shortly before the holiday set, has no new polishes, but many of orly's past popular glitz. sadly, this special line was not included in my subscription box. (although, it is offered at a discount) shame that the holiday "darlings of defiance" box lost out on the sparkle. i suppose laverne used it all up. gotta love that crafty minx.
happy defiant holiday, bitches. thanks for reading.
